Abstract

Characterization is a crucial element in literature, particularly in novels. The research aims to discuss and understand the psychological aspects of Bilbo's characterization, shedding light on his personality development throughout the novel. From the actual characteristics of Bilbo Baggin’s and the progress characterization of the main character in the adventurous story in The Hobbit Novel. This research focuses on analyzing the characterization of Bilbo Baggins in J.R.R. Tolkien's novel "The Hobbit" through the lens of Sigmund Freud's Psychoanalysis Theory. The theory's three components - Id, Ego, and Superego - are used to examine Bilbo's personality and behavior. This study employs a qualitative method, utilizing psychological analysis to explore the characterization of Bilbo Baggins. From the deductive to the inductive analysis of the conversation and the main character action and behavior were founded through the novel narration. The findings reveal that Bilbo's personality is shaped by the interplay of Id, Ego, and Superego, influencing his actions and decisions throughout the story. Each part of Id, Ego and Superego form a unity of Characterization of Bilbo Baggin from his actual character shown in the beginning of the novel in line with the psychoanalysis theory.
