Abstract

This study aims to examine the representation of racism and limitations experienced by African women in the film Hidden Figures (2016) through a critical analysis approach. The film tells the true story of three African female scientists Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan, and Mary Jackson who worked at NASA during the era of racial segregation in the United States. Using intersectionality theory and racial critique, this study analyzes how the three faced structural barriers stemming from racial and gender discrimination in a work environment dominated by white men. The results of the analysis show that the film Hidden Figures strongly represents the dual struggles of black women in fighting stereotypes, social exclusion, and institutional inequality. This study highlights the importance of the visibility of minority female figures in historical narratives and their often overlooked contributions. This study also emphasizes the need for an intersectional approach in understanding the dynamics of power in popular culture and formal institutions.
