Abstract

This research aimed at identifying the type and the meaning of slang words in “Stranger Things Season 4” movie series. Slang word is a language used by some people to interact with each other in some communities. This research will contribute to linguistic studies, especially in sociolinguistic, specifically slang words in “Stranger Things Season 4” movie series and provides extensive information about slang words. This research used qualitative descriptive method. The source of data is taken from the nine episode of the dialogues and the transcript of “Stranger Things Season 4” movie series. The data were analyzed and classified according to its respective characteristics of slang words by using Allan and Burridge’s theory (2006). The results of the research show that the researcher found and classified the data into five characteristics of slang words based on the theory. There are fresh and creative refers to the new form of word that makes more expressive (brochachos is brother, and fancy-schmancy is extremely fancy); flippant refers to the word that has a different meaning with the actual meaning (prick is annoying person, and ditch is to get rid of); imitative refers to the word that imitates from a Standard English word (dunno is do not know, and gotta is go to); acronym refers to the abbreviation from several words (AKA is also known as, and ASAP is as soon as possible); and clipping refers to the word that is formed as a result of a piece of the actual word (‘em is them).
