Abstract
This research explores the interplay between cultural elements and language style in the translation of Dubliners by James Joyce into Indonesian. Focusing specifically on the short story "The Sisters," about a young boy grappling with the death of a local priest, revealing layers of moral ambiguity, religious influence, and unspoken community tensions in early 20th-century Dublin. The study aims to identify the types of language styles and cultural terms found in the original text and how these elements are rendered in the Indonesian translation. Using a qualitative comparative method, the research applies Leech and Short’s (2007) stylistic categories, Newmark’s (1988) cultural term classifications, and Venuti’s (1995) translation strategies. The findings reveal various shifts, adaptations, and losses in both linguistic and cultural dimensions during the translation process. Through detailed analysis of lexical choices, grammatical structures, figurative language, and cohesion features, the study shows that translation is not only a linguistic act but also a cultural negotiation. This research contributes to the field of translation studies by highlighting the importance of preserving cultural nuance and stylistic integrity in literary translation, particularly when adapting Irish literature for Indonesian readers.
