Abstract
This research is entitled ‘The Analysis of Social Class in “The Notebook” Novel Written by Nicholas Sparks through Sociological Theory’. “The Notebook” novel is a novel that tells about love and affection between two people. It was published in October 1996 by Warner Books in United States. The author of this novel is an American novelist and screenwriter. He is Nicholas Sparks that was born in December 31, 1965. The novel he wrote (The Notebook) was later adapted into a movie in the same name with the novel. The writer uses this novel in order to obtain the information about the social class that the characters have in the novel. The writer uses sociological theory to analyze the social class categories that appears in the novel through sociological theory of social class by Max Weber. In this research, the writer would like to focus on the social class which appears between the main character, Noah and the society in the novel. The writer classified their social class based on their reputation, education, power, wealth, and the picture of their living. As the result of this research, the writer finds out the social class that appears in “The Notebook” novel. Noah Calhoun is in the lower-class position, but in the end, Noah’s social class change into middle-class because of his wealth is increasing. Allie, a woman that Noah loved is in the upper-class. Another character in “The Notebook” novel is Lon who is in the same class with Allie, the upper- upper class. In the end, social class was eventually did not concern with the ending of the story and the social problem in the novel can be solved with respecting each other.
