Abstract

The writer is interested to compare Indonesian and American English hoaxes to find out whether hoaxers use different methods to get readers‘ attention from different culture and whether culture influences the creation of hoax‘s content. The data for this study are taken from fact-checking websites. The selected data are data from Facebook or Twitter‘s users. As hoax is not a new phenomenon, there are sources that list the characteristics of hoax such as from journals, fact- checking websites, and experts in communication. The writer uses Relevance Theory by Wilson & Sperber (2006) to discuss those characteristics. Relevance Theory is a Pragmatics theory that combines human cognition and the ability to interpret the message. There are two principles of Relevance Theory: 1) Human cognition tends to be geared to the maximization of relevance, 2) Every ostensive stimulus conveys a presumption of its own optimal relevance. The writer views that Relevance Theory is a suitable theory to discuss about hoaxes regarding its nature to get the readers‘ attention. The writer uses a qualitative method for this study to explore and explain the findings. As a result, the writer finds correlation between Relevance Theory and the hoax‘ contents. In order to get the readers‘ attention, the creation of hoax tends to exploit the human cognition and emotion by providing a short route to reach an intended conclusion or creating anxiety to reduce the ability to think clearly for example. The writer also finds that culture can influence hoax‘s contents in social media where the topics, the actors, the items presented in a hoax are familiar terms in a certain culture.
