Abstract

This research entitled The Analysis of The Non-Observance of The Gricean Maxim Found in The Hunger Games Series. The subject of this research is The Hunger Games Series. The Hunger Games is one of popular romance of young adult movie released on 2012, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (2013), The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 (2014) and The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 (2015). The series is set in the country of Panem. Every year the Government in the Capitol organizes an event with 24 teenagers which choose randomly selected from the oppressed District of Panem. The Hunger Games are just full of sacrifice with killing each other, how people survive in the arena and the event is broadcast live on television. In this research, the writer had choose the topic about The NonObservance of Gricean Maxim. The writer used pragmatics theory by H.P Grice approach in analyzing this research. The purpose of this study is to find out the non-observance of the gricean maxim on the utterances the character in The Hunger Games series. From all the data total collected were 31, divided into 77,4% data of Flouting a maxim which consist of 10 in the maxim violation of quantity, 3 in maxim violation of quality, 8 in maxim violation of relevance, 3 in maxim violation of manner. Meanwhile, in violating the maxim it is found 19,3% or 6 data, no data has found at Infringing the maxim and Opting out the maxim, and the last it is found 3,2% or 1 data in suspending maxim.
