Abstract

This research aims to analyze the character of Josephine March in the movie Little Women (2019) directed by Greta Gerwig through the lens of liberal feminism. The main focus of this study is to identify how liberal feminist values are reflected in economic, social, political, and educational aspects as portrayed by the main character, Josephine March. Jo is portrayed as an independent and ambitious woman who rejects traditional social norms that confine women to roles as wives and mothers. This study employs a descriptive qualitative approach and adopts Rosemarie Tong's theory of liberal feminism. The analysis reveals that Jo fights for economic independence, challenges societal pressure regarding marriage, advocates for political rights through ownership of her intellectual work, and supports equal educational access for both boys and girls. In conclusion, Josephine March is the embodiment of a modern woman who courageously challenged gender inequality and advocated for freedom and equal rights in various spheres of life.
