Abstract
One of the most crucial aspects of bilingualism is Code Switching. In any society where multiple languages are spoken, the people living there will transition between them. The purpose of this study is to identify speakers’ perceptions of the types and reasons for Code Switching in Labuan Bajo. Fifteen participants were given questionnaires with various sorts and justifications for Code Switching in communications related to tourism. The writer then uses Hoffman's (1991) theory in conjunction with Huberman & Miles (1994) data analysis techniques to examine the various forms and causes of Code Switching. Hoffman (1991) identified six categories of Code Switching that are present in the data, with the exception of Intra-lexical switching. These categories include Intra-sentential Code Switching, Inter-sentential Code Switching, Tag Switching, Establishing continuity with the previous speaker, Intra-lexical Switching, and Involving a change in pronunciation. The results of the research findings show that three participants used an establishing continuity with previous speaker, two participants used as Tag switching; one participant used involving pronunciation change, and four participants are classified as Intra-sentential Code Switching; five participants belong to inter-sentential Code Switching. In conclusion, many tourist communications in Labuan Bajo have been found to use Code Switching, according to the fifteen individuals who were interviewed. Nevertheless, the utterances do not exhibit Intra-lexical Code Switching. The writer concluded that Intra-sentential Code Switching is the most used in the conversation. In reference to the rationale for code-switching, the researcher has also ascertained the causes behind the visitors' use of code-switching throughout their interactions in Labuan Bajo. Hoffman (1991) enumerated seven causes for the behavior of code switching. Such as Talking about particular topic, Quoting somebody else, Interjection, Being emphatic about something, Repetition used for clarification, Seeking to make the speech's content more understandable for the listener, Expressing identity of group. It is concluded that many reasons for Code Switching are present in the statements made by interviewee except for two reasons, which is Interjection and being emphatic about something.
