Abstract
Sign is a concept that created by human to indicate everything around them, signs are everywhere, they are around us without us noticing, signs can take any form such as color, flavor, scent, sound, etc. Sign also exist in cultural, which is interesting because of the history behind the signs that it becomes myth, this research is about semiotic analysis of signs in culture, especially the Chinese new year, the aim of this research is to find the meaning of sign in Chinese new year ritual and tradition, the writer used Roland Barthes theory of semiotics about denotation, connotation and myth to analyze the data. The writer used qualitative method to analyze the data. The writer found that the younger generations seldom ask about the meaning and the context behind the tradition, even though they are celebrating and do the tradition, this can cause confusion for them as they don’t know the meaning and context. The research contains 12 of signs that exist in Chinese new year ritual and tradition and its meaning according to Roland Barthes theory of semiotic. The conclusion of the research is the younger generations have to learn more about their culture from the older generations in order to preserve it for the future generations.
