Abstract
In this study the writer wants to analyze the derivational suffixes found in The One and Only Ivan novel by Katherine Applegate. This study aims to discover the derivational suffixes and the functions of each derivational suffix in The One and Only Ivan novel by Katherine Applegate. The exploration of the suffixes is needed to conduct because it could help english learners significantly in enriching their vocabulary. The writer used the qualitative method as the research approach in this thesis to find out the derivational suffixes and the functions of each derivational suffix. The data collected in this study are in the form of words which contain English suffixes. The technique for collecting the data are by downloading The One and Only Ivan novel from internet, reading all chapter in the novel, and collecting all the word which carry derivational suffixes. The technique for analyzing the data, the writer uses the theory of Plag (2002) to sort the suffixes into their categories. Then the writer makes the table and also separates the derivational suffixes with the base word. At last, the writer makes the conclusion. The result of this study shows that lots of derivational suffixes in every type are found in this novel. There are four types of suffixes which are used in this novel. The types of suffixes found are nominal suffix, adverbial suffix, adjectival suffix, and verbal suffix. The suffixes found in this novel are -ness, -ion, -ation, -ful, -er, - ance, -ence, -ment, -or, -ity, -ty, -ly, -y, -able, -ic, -ive, -en, -ful, -en. The functions of these suffixes may form another word class from the root word or change the meaning of the root word.
