Abstract

This research aims at showing that Theo Faber, the main character in the novel The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides and published in 2019, suffered posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and the trauma disturbed his life. She took the narration, statements, conversations, or dialogues from the novel as the research data. In addition, she also did intemet browsing to find relevant additional information. The writer applied a qualitative approach to interpret the data descriptively. To achieve the above research goals, the writer analyzed the data for which she employed trauma theory of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) refers to Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorder Fifth Edition by American Psychiatric Association (2013). The research fmdings show that Theo Faber experienced four main symptoms—re-experiencing, avoidance, cognitive and mood symptoms, as well as arousal. The first symptom, re-experiencing, has three kinds of symptoms—remembering the events (flashbacks), intrusive thoughts, and having nightmare. The second symptom, avoidance, has two kinds of symptoms—avoid the things that related with the trauma and having trouble in socializing. The kind of the third symptom—cognitive and mood symptom — is self-blame. The fourth symptom, arousal, has three kinds of symptoms—having trouble with concentration, sad, and anxiety. It is concluded that the main character, Theo Faber, has the four main posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms, and its disturbed his life.
