Abstract

Activities of an organization can be considered moral or immoral in accordance with theories of morality. This study aims at showing how WICKED’s experiments are considered as moral or immoral. WICKED is a fictional organization in the novel ‘The Fever Code’ (2016) by James Dashner. The organization was willing to do everything to achieve its goal to find a cure that could save human race from virus called Flare. Hence, it took by force some kids from their famlies, as the subjects of its experiments and did some terrible things during its experiments. The data were collected from the novel. Descriptive qualitative approach was applied to analyze the data by employing the utilitarianism theory from perspective of Jeremy Bentham and John Stuart Mill. Bentham’s perspective focuses on calculating pleasure or happiness through seven elements – the intensity, the duration, the certainty, the propinquity, the fecundity, the purity, and the extent. Mill’s idea of utilitarianism about the quality of happiness can be measured empirically and to judge an action objectively and morally. The research findings show that of Bentham’s seven elements, WICKED’s experiments have met the five elements that are considered moral and that in Mill’s perspective of utilitarianism, the experiments considered objectively and morally right in terms of happiness’ quality because WICKED was established by some intelligent people with a better knowledge to find a cure and bring back happines to their world. Therefore, It is concluded that WICKED’s experiments are considered moral in accordance with both perspective of utilitarianism.
