Abstract

This study aims to show the factors which made Louisa Clark persistent and the effects of her persistence on her life, as seen in the novel Me Before You written by Jojo Moyes in 2012. The writer applied qualitative approach to interpret the data descriptively. She took the data from the narrations, dialogues and description in the novel. She analyzed Louisa Clark‘s persistence. In this regard, she employed Napoleon Hill‘s theory on the definite causes of persistence – Definiteness of Purpose, Desire, Self-reliance, Definiteness of plans, Accurate Knowledge, Cooperation, and willpower, to answer the first research question, and on the results of persistence which brings her to the steps leading to one may control one‘s economic destiny, freedom and independence of thought, riches in small or great quantities, and convert dream into physical realities, and to mastery of fear, discouragement, indifference, to answer the second research question. The research findings show that Louisa Clark was persistent due to all of the above factors, and that of all the six results of persistence or effects, the writer did not find all the effects of her persistence on her life; only the steps leading to one‘s control one‘s economic destiny, freedom and independence of thought, riches in small or great quantities, and convert dream into physical realities. As such, it is concluded that Louisa Clark had all of the factors which made her persistent, but that her persistence did not bring her to all of the steps.
