Abstract

This research is aimed to obtain the information about the characterizations of the main character, August Pullman in the novel of “Wonder” which reveals through psychoanalysis theory. The data source is taken from a novel entitled “Wonder” by R.J Palacio which was published in 2012. In this novel, August struggles to fight bullying and tries to convince his schoolmates that he‟s just like them, despite appearance. The theory used in this research is psychoanalysis theory which put forward by Sigmund Freud to analyze August. To analyze August, the writer discusses August‟s characteristics and behavior by analyzing personality structure, topography of mind, and defense mechanism. Psychoanalysis is also examines psychological disorders that occur in people and the writer finds anxiety behavior that occurs to August in the novel. The research methodology used in this thesis is qualitative research method. Begins with reading the novel as a whole to understand the problems and the events that occur in the story. Then the writer focuses on the main character and identifies the data from the novel that relates to theory of psychoanalysis. After that, the writer seek to found and take notes the quotations related to psychoanalytic theory such as anxiety, id, ego, superego, conscious, subconcious, unconscious, and defense mechanism as evidence to support research analysis. As the conclusion, the writer discovered that reality anxiety happens to the main character, August which is caused by jittery when adaptation in the new environment. Furthermore, his ego fills the superego though initially follow the id. Topography of mind also shows his behaviors and memories. Then, to cope his anxiety, he develops defense mechanism such as intellectualization, repression, and sublimation. After doing this research, the writer discovered that all of the psychoanalysis theories that mentioned reveal about his twenty characterizations.
