Abstract

Semantics refers to the branch of study within linguistics that deals with language and how people understand the meaning. The researcher had analyzed the lexical relations in the song lyrics written by Alan Menken. The objectives of the study are to find the types of lexical relations and to obtain the most dominant type of lexical relations in the song lyrics written by Alan Menken. The study had applied a descriptive qualitative approach to explore the data in the description. The technique of collecting data was an observation. In doing so, the researcher had searched the song lyrics on the web internet (Genius). These song lyrics are I See the Light, Beauty and the Beast, A Whole New World, and Speechless. The researcher had employed the theory of lexical relations by Saeed (2000). As mentioned to Saeed, there are eight types of lexical relations such as homonymy, polysemy, synonymy, antonymy, hyponymy, meronymy, member-collection, and portion-mass. However, in doing this research, the researcher had limited the discussion only for six types: homonymy, polysemy, synonymy, antonymy, hyponymy, and meronymy. The research findings show the types of lexical relations that were found are twenty-six cases of synonymy, nineteen cases of homonymy, eighteen cases of antonymy, fifteen cases of polysemy, nine cases of hyponymy, and nine cases also of meronymy. Hence, it is concluded the most dominant type of lexical relations was synonymy with twenty-six cases. Through this analysis, the researcher knew that the words that had been found into lexical relations, have a different parts of speech (in this analysis had been found these parts of speech: verb, noun, adjective, adverb, and preposition) which become the causes of words have more than one meaning. In these song lyrics, one word can also have more than one lexical relations types.
