Abstract

Racial Prejudice is an unfair treatment of another person’s life, which evaluates other people based on their race, gender, beliefs, or other personal affiliation, into a negative one. As the example, the belief of superior race, and classify other people to a subordinate situation, as such a lower social class. This misleading content can be found in the novel written by Harper Lee, entitled To Kill a Mockingbird, and is the subject of this research. The research conducted by social identity theory (1979) and sociology of literature approach (1984) to analyze the data. The writer’s main purpose is to analyze the characters’ social identity as the root of the social problems and examine the content as the real-life mirror because of the aspects of the social phenomenon that contained in the novel. She employed a qualitative method in the research. The result of this research shows that social identity plays a role as the key of the bad inter-group relationship. The bad inter-group relationship cause social conflicts toward each other, the conflicts that happened in the fictional novel contained the sociological aspects in human real-life which are in term of racial prejudice and discrimination acts, this research also found that the conflicts as a spur of a social change on how the way people see racial prejudice and discrimination behavior in the novel.
