Abstract

This research aims at finding the types, the reasons and the social factors of Nessie Judge’s code switching in her Video Blog on YouTube Channel. Nessie Judge’s speeches in her three videos entitled “Teori konspirasi termisterius: Marilyn Monroe”, “Kasus misteri yang belum terpecahkan! JFK” and “Konsipirasi kecelakaan Putri Diana” are used as the research data. For the data analysis, the transcribed speeches are used. This research applies descriptive qualitative approach. To analyze the data, this research employs the theory of Hoffmann (1991) to investigate the types and the reason of code switching. For the analysis of social factors on code switching, it employs Holmes’s theory (2013). The research findings show that only four types of code switching – Intra-sentential code switching, Inter-sentential code switching, Emblematic switching and Intra-lexical switching – are found in the data. Concerning the reasons of code switching, the research findings also reveal that only six reasons – Talking about particular topic, Quoting somebody else, Interjection, Being emphatic about something, Repetition used for clarification and Intention of clarifying the speech content for interlocutor. In addition, the research results also reveal that the Participants, the Setting or the Social Context of the Interactions, the Topic, and the Functions are the social factors found in the data. It is concluded that not all the types and the reasons of code switching are found in the data. However, for the social factors, it is concluded that all the social factors are found in the data.
