Abstract

This research investigates the use of hedges by the presidential candidates of Republic Indonesia in the fourth Jokowi-Prabowo debate held on March 30th, 2019. The fourth debate is interesting because both candidates performed and presented their opinion attractively. Moreover, the level of leadership of the two candidates is also clear. The purposes of this research are to discover the most frequent hedges used and to describe the reasons for Jokowi and Prabowo using hedges in their debate. The data of this research are secondary data that are collected from the fourth presidential debate video belonging to KompasTV that are uploaded on youtube.com and the transcription retrieved from the website of BahasaKita.com. This research applies quantitative and qualitative approach. Quantitatively, frequency and percentage of hedging devices are found and tabulated. Qualitatively, an explanation of why such hedging devices used is described. The data are analyzed by employing Françoise Salager-Meyer’s theory of hedges (1997) for the aforementioned research objectives. The research findings reveal that the total of hedging devices produced by Jokowi and Prabowo are equal, with a total of 99 occurrences for each. The most frequently hedging devices used by Jokowi are modal auxiliary verbs (altogether 37 occurrences), amounting to 37.37% of all the hedges found in his utterances. On the other hand, the most frequently hedging devices used by Prabowo are introductory phrases consisting of 27 occurrences (27.27%) of all the hedges found in his utterances. With regard to the reasons, the research findings also reveal that Jokowi and Prabowo used hedges to minimize the threat-to-face, as ways of being more precise in reporting results, and positive or negative politeness strategies. It is concluded that all devices of hedges are discovered in the fourth Jokowi-Prabowo presidential debate but not all the reasons for hedging are found in the debate.
