Abstract

The title of this research is The Analysis of Unit Shift Translation Found in Child of Deaf Adults (CODA) Movie Subtitle from English to Bahasa Indonesia. The goal of this research is to figure out how unit shifts appear in the English script and its subtitle script translation, as well as what is the dominant shift that appear in the subtitle script translation. The theory utilized in this research is based on Catford's translation shift theory (1965) focusing on unit shift. This research is conducted upon unit analysis of Child of Deaf Adults (CODA), a 2021 movie directed by Sian Heder in its original language which is in English to Bahasa Indonesia subtitle translation. The Bahasa Indonesia subtitle was translated by Mimi Larasati Bonnetto which was then listed to AppleTV+ system as one of CODA movie subtitles. In this research, the researcher applied qualitative descriptive method and conducted the analysis by reading and comparing the English script to the Bahasa Indonesia subtitle script translation. The data then categorized based on the particular unit, and the shift patterns are discovered following the categorization. Based on the analysis, it discovered that 46 units in the source language are shifted to other units in the target language as the findings of the research. The types of unit shift found are 4 shifts from morpheme to word, 15 shifts from word to phrase, 17 shifts from phrase to word, 1 shift from clause to word, 1 shift from clause to phrase, 2 shifts from sentence to word and 6 shifts from sentence to phrase.
