Abstract

This research is titled “Translation Method Analysis on Figurative Language in Novel Crazy Rich Asians Adapted into Kaya Tujuh Turunan. Translation is generally defined as converting text from one language (SL) into another (TL). Translation method is a method used by the translator in the translation process to achieve the desired result. Hartono (2014:355) explains that “in translating figurative language, a translator must be able to maintain the imaginative pleasure, imagery, and emotional intensity without eliminating the exact meaning and to make it socio-culturally acceptable in the target language”. This research is aimed to identify types of figurative language found in novel “Crazy Rich Asians” and to analyze translation methods applied by the translator when translating figurative languages in “Crazy Rich Asians” into its Indonesian adaptation “Kaya Tujuh Turunan”. The novel is analyzed using the theory of Abrams’ figurative language and Newmark’s translation method. This research is a descriptive qualitative research. The object of this research is a novel by Kevin Kwan titled “Crazy Rich Asian” and translated version “Kaya Tujuh Turunan” by Cindy Kristanto. The novel contains 154 figurative languages. After examining the figurative language data in "Crazy Rich Asians," it was discovered that there were 51 similes, 43 hyperboles, 25 imagery, 22 metonymy, and 13 irony. According to the findings of the research, six of the eight translation methods given by Newmark were employed in translating the words, phrases, clauses, and sentences from English to Indonesian in the novel "Crazy Rich Asians." They are word for word translation, literal translation, faithful translation, semantic translation, idiomatic translation, and communicative translation. We may conclude that when conducting translation, translators use a number of translation methods. The translation methods utilized are governed by the translation's objective and the field circumstances. The usage of translation methods is critical since it influences the translation's output. When translation methods are abused, the TL meaning differs from the SL meaning.
