Abstract

The research investigates the use of code-switching in a video blog. The research is aimed at finding the information on the types of code-switching and the reasons of the use of codeswitching found in the utterances of one of the episode of video blog or vlog “Deddy Corbuzier Uncensored bersama Boy William - Nebeng Boy Season 2” on Boy William YouTube channel. The video blog or vlog was hosted by Boy Wiiliam and the guest star was Deddy Corbuzier. The research applies descriptive qualitative approach. The data are collected from the video blog containing the utterances made by the two speakers in their conversation. The transcribed utterances as the data are analyzed by employing Hoffmann’s theory of code-switching (1991) for the above two research objectives. The research findings show that the type of code-switching found in the video blog are intra-sentential code-switching, inter-sentential code-switching, establishing continuity switches, emblematic switching and the last type, involving a change of pronunciation. In addition, the research findings also reveal that the reasons why the two speakers used code-switching in the video blog are the speakers are talking about a particular topic, interjection, the speakers being emphatic about something, repetition use for clarification, and the last the speakers are expressing the identity of their group. It is concluded that not all the types of code-switching are found in the utterances of the two above speakers’ conversation, and that not all the reasons why they used code-switching are found in the utterances.
